Vietnam Conflict

The Vietnam War was a prolonged conflict that occurred from 1955 to 1975, primarily in Vietnam but also in neighboring countries like Laos and Cambodia. It involved the communist forces of North Vietnam and the Viet Cong (a communist insurgent group in the South) against South Vietnam and its principal ally, the United States.

The war's roots lie in Vietnam's division after World War II, with the North under Ho Chi Minh’s communist leadership and the South under an anti-communist government supported by the U.S. The war was part of the broader context of the Cold War, a global struggle between the communist bloc led by the Soviet Union and China and the capitalist bloc led by the United States.

The U.S. became heavily involved in the early 1960s, escalating its military presence after the Gulf of Tonkin incident in 1964. American involvement included large-scale troop deployments, extensive bombing campaigns (such as Operation Rolling Thunder), and significant financial and military support for the South Vietnamese government.

The war featured guerrilla warfare, conventional battles, and significant civilian casualties. The U.S. faced challenges due to the difficult terrain, the resilience of the Viet Cong, and waning public support back home.

In 1973, the U.S. signed the Paris Peace Accords and began withdrawing its troops. However, fighting continued between North and South Vietnam. In 1975, North Vietnamese forces captured Saigon, the capital of South Vietnam, leading to the reunification of the country under communist control.
